Description

Markon is seeking a Specialized Engineer III to support the Naval Nuclear Laboratory’s Welding Engineering organization at the Bettis site. This position will work with a team of engineers to assess, develop, test, and evaluate metallic and non-metallic repair technologies through laboratory activities and commercial subcontract efforts, supporting stakeholders across the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, shipyards, and Naval Reactors Headquarters.

 

NOTE: This position requires regular onsite work at the West Mifflin, PA location and may be performed remotely up to 10% of the time. The position requires an active DOE L clearance (Or equivilent DoD secret and above) and includes some travel to vendors and shipyards.

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineering teams to identify, research, test, and evaluate metallic and non-metallic repair technologies.
  • Leverage existing welding, machining, and other industrial processes to support repair technology development.
  • Assist with the planning, follow-up, and execution of technical work efforts.
  • Develop technical instructions and procedures supporting engineering and repair activities.
  • Track procurement actions and budget performance associated with assigned projects.
  • Prepare technical submittals, recommendations, and other engineering documentation.
  • Support project planning, equipment testing, and repair deployment activities at vendors and shipyards.
  • Support complex engineering assignments involving both established and novel repair technologies.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and support groups across the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, shipyards, and Naval Reactors Headquarters.
  • Plan and report project performance within NNL’s broader repair technology development community.
  • Support laboratory operations and execution of repair technology development activities.
  • Assist in developing, testing, evaluating, and ultimately qualifying repair procedures.
  • Consult with fabrication vendors and shipyards to facilitate technology transfer.
  • Plan and execute work programs and experimental activities.
  • Analyze experimental results and prepare technical reports.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Must have an active DOE L clearance to be considered (DoD Secret and above may be considered for clearance transfer).
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; OR
  • Master of Science degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience making technical presentations.
  • Ability to lead and execute laboratory operations in a productive, timely, and compliant manner.

Desired:

  • Ability to help develop, test, evaluate, and eventually qualify repair procedures in a laboratory environment.
  • Ability to consult with fabrication vendors and shipyards to facilitate technology transfer.
  • Knowledge or experience with repair operations involving:
    • Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).
    • Gas metal arc welding (GMAW).
    • Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW).
    • Epoxies and composites.
    • Mechanical and machining processes.
  • Ability, or ability to learn, to develop and interpret specifications, drawings, and engineering standards.
  • Ability to plan and execute work programs.
  • Ability to design experiments, analyze experimental results, and prepare technical reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully execute laboratory work.
  • Familiarity with inspection methods.
  • Excellent individual initiative and creativity.

Salary Range

USD $100,000.00 - USD $127,000.00 /Yr.

Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
